Call summary

The Medical Research Council invites proposals for its new investigator research grant in molecular and cellular medicine. Grants are tenable for three years and are usually given on the basis of 80 per cent of full economic costs of the research to the applicant’s institution. Funding may cover the following: •a salary commensurate with the time attributed to the project, up to 50 per cent of the applicant’s total contracted working time; •a salary for the hours attributable to the project of any co-investigators; •support for additional research or technical costs; •consumables and equipment; •travel costs; •data preservation, data sharing and dissemination costs.

PI eligibility

Applicants must be able to clearly demonstrate that their skills and experience at the time of their application match those of the transition to independence career stage. They must hold at least a graduate degree, and are usually expected to have a PhD or an MD. The research may be carried out at the UK institution at which the applicant is based or an eligible UK research organisation to which they wish to move. Applicants may hold a lecturer appointment, a junior fellowship, or be in another research staff position. Those who hold or have held early-career training fellowships are also eligible. Co-investigators are allowed if they bring expertise to the project that is outside of the applicant’s field.
