Call summary
The Medical Research Council invites proposals for its new investigator research grant in molecular and cellular medicine. The MRC is looking for new investigators with a proposal for research that increases understanding within the field of molecular and cellular medicine.
The molecular and cellular medicine board (MCMB) funds research into basic biological mechanisms or technologies relevant to human health and disease. The MRC aims to increase understanding of:
the structure and function of molecules and complexes
the cellular environment during development and mature states
how biological systems respond to challenges (for example, drugs and toxins) and diseases
The MCMB leads MRC’s investments in cancer, from fundamental discovery science to epidemiology, experimental medicine and early translation. Research focused on specific organ systems or diseases (with the exception of cancer and haematology) is normally supported through our other research boards.
There is no limit to the funding you can apply for, but the typical full economic cost of a project is under £1 million. MRC will usually fund 80% of the full economic cost.
Scientific scope
The MRC is looking to fund research in areas including, but not limited to:
cell biology
structural biology and biophysics
molecular and functional genetics, epigenetics, genomics
developmental and stem cell biology (excluding neurobiology)
regenerative medicine
molecular haematology
development of new tools and technologies relevant to MCMB remit, such as:
nanotechnology
chemical biology
synthetic biology
medical bioinformatics, including:
biostatistics
computational biology
systems biology
cancer
toxicology and adverse health effects of environmental exposures
pharmacology.
PI eligibility
Eligibility Note To be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity you must:
have research organisation support
be able to show that your skills and experience match those in the ‘transition to independence’ stage of the MRC applicant skills and experience table
use this grant to support your long-term career goals and chosen career route
show that you will direct and be the sole intellectual leader of the proposed project
focus your application within the research area of molecular and cellular medicine.
