Call summary

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council invites applications for its bioinformatics and biological resources fund. This facilitates the establishment, maintenance and enhancement of bioinformatics and biological resources to support the UK bioscience research community. The council aims to ensure that the UK bioscience community has access to state-of-the-art bioinformatics and biological infrastructure, facilities and resources, in order to facilitate ground-breaking research in an internationally competitive environment. Bioinformatics resources enable the management, analysis and sharing of large or complex datasets and the development of novel software solutions that enable deeper analysis of existing datasets and greater understanding of biological systems. The total budget is £6 million. Grants are awarded at 80 per cent full economic cost for projects worth up to £2m. Projects may last up to five years.

Scientific scope

Biological resources provide access to materials that underpin cutting edge bioscience research, including culture and germplasm collections, mutant lines, DNA samples, clones and genetic libraries. Projects may include the following: •establishment and maintenance of a new resource that would be applicable to a broad BBSRC user community; •maturation and subsequent maintenance of a project-based resource into a community-based one; •development and subsequent maintenance of an existing community resource to increase its relevance to a broad BBSRC user group; •association or integration of distinct resources, that will enhance their utility and create an upgraded resource with a greater value than the sum of the parts.

PI eligibility

UK HEIs, research council institutes, approved independent research organisations and individuals employed by an eligible research organisation may apply.
