Call summary

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Medical Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council, through the engineering biology transition awards, invites applications for their engineering biology research, community and capacity development call. This supports research, community and capacity development in engineering biology. The aim is to encourage new collaborations and draw together community efforts across engineering biology, towards the themes and challenges of the proposed national engineering biology programme. The total budget is £15 million. Grants are worth up to £1.5 million for up to two years.

Scientific scope

The project should be aligned with the following themes: •food systems; •biomedicine; •clean growth; •environmental solutions; •bioinspired design; •novel materials; •bioengineered cells and systems.

PI eligibility

Institutions and researchers eligible for UKRI funding including HEIs, strategically funded institutes, eligible independent research organisations and public sector research establishments may apply. New collaborations between and across institutions are strongly encouraged, as well as collaborations with private sector partners. However, businesses cannot be funded through this opportunity. PIs and co-investigators must be at lecturer level or above and meet the standard UKRI eligibility criteria.
