Call summary

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) invites expressions of interest for its developing STFC nuclear physics priorities call. This supports small nuclear physics projects focused on feasibility. The proposal must relate to the strategic opportunities outlined in the nuclear physics roadmap, namely nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, hadron physics and phases of strongly interacting matter. The total budget is £800,000. Projects may last for up to two years. The full economic cost of the project can be up to £250,000 and funding may cover up to 80 per cent of the full economic cost.

Scientific scope

Projects must be: •developing novel technologies, beyond the concept stage, to underpin the nuclear physics science programme and to place UK scientists in leading positions in future projects; •supporting applications that lead towards the exploitation of STFC technology infrastructure for high priority scientific projects; •exploratory technology development work prior to starting or joining a new project; •research and development initiatives and small upgrades to existing projects.

PI eligibility

The PI may be at any career stage and can be an academic member of staff or hold a fellowship, won through open competition. They must be an employee of a research organisation that is eligible for UKRI grants, such as HEIs, research council institutes, independent research organisations or public sector research establishments.
