Call summary

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council invites applications for its provide a scanning transmission electron microscopy national facility call. This supports a national research facility in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The facility must be available to international researchers. The grant is worth up to £3.9 million for up to five years.

Scientific scope

The core purpose of the STEM national facility should be primarily the provision of: ▪a high-quality STEM facility enabling sub-angstrom imaging and associated spectroscopic techniques as a key capability; ▪high precision spectroscopic capability; ▪a STEM service that reaches beyond the capabilities of those available at an institutional level; ▪internationally leading energy resolution; ▪a service that maintains its capabilities by incorporating and developing next generation STEM techniques.

PI eligibility

Applicants must be a researcher at a UK organisation eligible for UKRI funding, such as UK HEI, research council institute, UKRI-approved independent research organisation, public sector research establishment, NHS body with research capacity. The researcher must be a resident in the UK and meet at least one of the criteria: employed at the submitting research organisation at a level equivalent to lecturer or above; hold a fixed-term contract that extends beyond the duration of the proposed project, and the host research organisation is prepared to give you all the support normal for; a permanent employee; hold an EPSRC, Royal Society or Royal Academy of Engineering fellowship aimed at later career stages; hold fellowships under other schemes.
