Call summary

The Science and Technology Facilities Council, as part of the Space Weather Innovation, Modelling, Measurement and Risk (SWIMMR) project, invites applications for its networkable instruments for ground-level neutron monitoring call. This supports the development and demonstration of a prototype ground-level neutron monitoring network. The grant is worth up to £140,000 for the design study phase and up to £1.26 million for the implementation phase. The award of funding for the design phase does not guarantee funding for the implementation phase.

Scientific scope

Particle Physics; Telescopes & Space Instrumentation. The prototype should aim to deliver compact instruments that: ▪operate independently in remote locations; ▪produce results comparable to existing monitors; ▪provide data that can be used by the Met Office and airborne radiation modelling. There are two phases to the project: design study phase, lasting up to 12 months; implementation phase, lasting up to 24 months.

PI eligibility

Applications are open to UK HEIs, approved research council institutes and approved independent research organisations. Public sector research establishments with 10 or more researchers with PhDs are also eligible to apply.
