Call summary
The Natural Environment Research Council invites proposals for its strategic capital call. This funds strategic equipment and development of built infrastructure that creates a new research capability in environmental sciences. Assets funded through the call allow the research community to deliver cutting-edge environmental science, generate exciting scientific discovery and build on effective and efficient capability to sustain and enhance high quality, world-leading research. Proposals must show sufficient evidence that the proposed asset aligns with the NERC environmental science remit and meets NERC’s essential criteria for capital investment. The total budget is £10 million to fund proposals worth between £500,000 and £1.5m. Successful proposals will be awarded at 100 per cent of the cost of the proposed capital asset.

PI eligibility
All UK HEIs that receive grant funding from one of the UK higher education funding bodies are eligible to apply. Research institutes, for which research councils have established a long-term involvement as major funder as part of the national research base are also eligible to receive research funding. Other independent research organisations may also be eligible to receive funding for research, if such research extends and enhances the national research base. Eligible institutions may submit a maximum of two proposals with a total combined value not exceeding £2 million. In such instances, only one proposal may be for built infrastructure.
