Call summary

The theme for this 2020 Call 03 is ‘Science of Sustainable Cities (Food)’. NRF CREATE’s current overarching focus is on research that provides the tools, technologies and perspectives to consider how cities can work better and evolve to be more sustainable, liveable and resilient. An important part of this specific themed call is the production and flow of food in urban environments. Please see Annex A of the Call Application Guidelines attached for further details. - Each award will support up to SGD5 million (~£2.8 million) per proposal (inclusive of all chargeable direct and indirect costs) over a 3-year period.

Scientific scope

Proposals should focus on enabling sciences and technologies that can potentially drive the advancement of Singapore’s sustainable urban food production and future foods landscape. Proposals for Sustainable Urban Food Production can include innovative technologies, tools and resources which can lead to sustainable food production. Examples might be processing technologies along the food production chain to promote the development of circular bio-economy in food production systems, intelligent monitoring and digital modelling of crop health and environment, renewable energy harvesting from natural or biomass sources. Proposals for Future Foods can include studies of food ingredients and structure interactions to build novel or modify food processing pathways and technologies. Alternate proteins, functional food development, flavour development, consumer perception and other supporting studies are also important research ideas in the development of more nutritious or functional foods.

PI eligibility

- Each application needs two Lead PIs (one should be a University of Cambridge faculty member with PI status in Cambridge and the second one may be from any of the eligible institutions listed in the guidance notes) - All PIs from non-Singapore based universities (including Cambridge) need to confirm at the expression of interest stage that they are willing to complete residency in Singapore of 20% of the grant length of 3 years (i.e. 7 months) and can do so in blocks of 4+ weeks duration. The PI residency is a key criteria for this funder and cannot be negotiated for this grant. Financial support for such stays is an eligible cost on the grant.
