Call summary

BioIC, in partnership with the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, invites entries for its call for projects under the collaborative training partnership PhD programme. This supports industrially relevant PhD projects that bring biotechnology closer to industrialisation. Applicants may apply to one or both of the following streams: BBSRC-funded studentships worth £103,815 each; and IBioIC-funded studentships, where IBioIC contribute £51,907, which is 50 per cent of the total costs. A total of 15 BBSRC-funded studentships and up to three IBioIC-funded studentships are available. The studentship duration is four years.

Scientific scope

Biotechnology. Projects must focus on one or more of the following themes: •sustainable feedstocks; •enzymes and biocatalysis or biotransformation; •cell factory construction and process physiology; •downstream processing; •integrated bioprocessing. Projects must demonstrate industrial relevance by the innovative use or application of biotechnology.

PI eligibility

Projects must be championed and led by an IBioIC HEI partner, or an N8 university for BBSRC-funded projects, and supported by at least one industrial partner. Applications with SME involvement are particularly encouraged. If any of the industrial partners are not members of IBioIC at the time application, all must become members before funding is awarded. The industrial partner must commit to providing a three- to 12-month industrial placement directly relevant to the PhD project. Evidence of additional funding from the industrial partner is required.
