Call summary

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council invites applications for the ARCHER 2 pioneer projects. These provide researchers with large amounts of computational resource to conduct computationally intensive modelling, simulation and calculations. A total of 3.35 million compute units is available for five to eight projects. Requests for allocations must be for a minimum of 165,000 CU per year, for up to two years.

Scientific scope

The objectives are to: •encourage and facilitate high-risk and high-reward research that has significant potential for large future impact; •award significant computational time to enable leading researchers and research groups to conduct large and ambitious projects delivering high-quality research within EPSRC’s remit; •encourage and support projects which need to use a very large number of processing cores; •challenge and develop the skills of experienced teams in the computational research community; •develop techniques at the forefront of high performance computing; •support research that is of high national importance and could lead to significant scientific or socio-economic impact.

PI eligibility

The PI must be resident in the UK and an academic employee at the lecturer or equivalent level at an eligible organisation, which may be an HEI, a research institute funded by a research council or an independent research organisation.
