Call summary

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council invites applications for the David Phillips fellowships. These support researchers who wish to establish their first independent research group in any area of science within the council’s remit. Up to five fellowships, worth up to £1 million at 80 per cent full economic cost, are available for a five-year period. The host institution should also make a substantial demonstration of support for the fellow, in terms of access to facilities and equipment, training and research costs.

PI eligibility

Applicants should hold a PhD or be expecting to have undergone a successful PhD viva before 30 November 2020. They should not hold, or have held, an open-ended academic position of lecturer level or equivalent, or an equivalent competitive fellowship that provides the opportunity to establish an independent research group and independent research status. Applicants should have at least three years of active postdoctoral research experience. Those who have previously applied for a grant as a PI or co-investigator are not eligible. Overseas researchers may apply but the host institution must be a UK-based university or BBSRC-sponsored institute.
