Call summary

The National Science Foundation invites proposals for its smart and connected communities grants. These support research to accelerate the creation of the scientific and engineering foundations that will enable smart and connected communities to bring about new levels of economic opportunity and growth, safety and security, health and wellness and overall quality of life. The anticipated total budget is USD 26 million. Integrative research grants track 1 is for budgets between USD 1.5m and USD 2.5m for up to three years; track 2 is for budgets up to USD 1.5m for up to three years. Planning grants are worth up to USD 150,000 each for one year.

Scientific scope

Three streams are supported: •integrative research grants tracks 1 and 2 – for fundamental integrative research that addresses technological and social science dimensions of smart and connected communities and pilots solutions together with communities; •planning grants – for capacity building to prepare project teams to propose future well-developed integrative research grants proposals.

PI eligibility

Foreign organisations may apply in consortium with US organisations. They must demonstrate why local support is not feasible and that they can carry out the activity more effectively.
