Call summary

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, under the Algae-UK network, invites applications for its industrial biotechnology approaches to biorefining marine biomass proof of concept scheme. This supports collaborations between academic partners and industrial partners to address the technical challenges in delivering industrial biotechnology approaches to biorefining marine biomasss. Funding is worth up to £50,000 at 100 per cent full economic costs over one year. At least three projects will receive funding. (Forecasted date for next year's call).

Scientific scope

Algae-UK and IBioIC will focus on supporting projects that facilitate: •the production of sustainable and naturally sourced ingredients and products; •the delivery of more sustainable bioprocesses that reduce environmental impacts and maximise resource conversion, return and recovery into products; •the potential to improve yields, scale of production and reduce production costs through bioengineering or bioprocessing strategies.

PI eligibility

The principal investigator must be resident in the UK and an academic employee at the lecturer or equivalent level at an eligible organisation, which may be a higher education institution, a research institute funded by a research council or an independent research organisation. They must be Algae-UK and BBNet Network members. Applications need not include an industrial partner, but are encouraged, particularly if additional funding is available.
