These are personal, career development focussed awards in any area funded by EPSRC. Open plus fellowships can design a package of work that meets your wider aspirations by championing a topic to deliver improvements in research culture. You must have either: a PhD and some years of additional research experience more than four years’ experience in a relevant field by the start of your fellowship You must be hosted and supported by an eligible UK research organisation during your fellowship. Your fellowship can be up to five years long and may be held part-time. We will fund 80% of the full economic cost (FEC) of your project. You may request funding for: staff costs equipment (up to £400,000 for one item) other items required to carry out the project costs related to impact travel and subsistence.

Your fellowship can focus on research in one or a combination of: discovery science innovation instrumentation and technique development software engineering.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is introducing new role types for funding opportunities being run on UKRI’s new Funding Service from 22 May 2023. For full details, see eligibility as an individual. You can apply if you have a PhD or have worked in a relevant field for at least four years by the start date of your fellowship. Open fellowships are for all career stages beyond postdoctoral level and include researchers who are close to their first academic appointment, leading in an area of technical development, or are a highly experienced researcher.
