Call summary

The Science and Technology Facilities Council invites applications for its industrial CASE studentships. These enable PhD students to work in collaboration with a non-academic organisation on projects that fall within the STFC core science programme, or that aim to apply technologies or techniques developed within the programme into other areas. The project must fall within the core programmes in astronomy, solar and planetary science, particle physics, particle astrophysics and cosmology, nuclear physics or accelerator science. Studentships are tenable for a minimum of three and a half years, during which the student should spend at least nine months at the non-academic body, which may be spread over 18 months.

Scientific scope

Particle, Plasma & Nuclear Physics; Universe Sciences

PI eligibility

Universities, research council institutes and independent research organisations may apply as the academic partner. Proposals may be led by either the academic supervisor at the academic partner or a supervisor at the non-academic partner organisation, but the application must be submitted by the academic partner. The non-academic partner must host the studentship in conjunction with the university where the student would be registered. Other UK-based organisations may act as the non-academic partner if they can provide students with distinctive research training and experience not available in an academic setting. In exceptional circumstances, organisations based overseas may be eligible but they must have an established UK-based research or production capability.
