Call summary

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research invites proposals for its joint call on development of next generation non-animal technologies. This supports alternatives to in vivo models in bioscience research. The total budget is £4 million. The full economic cost of the project can be up to £250,000. The BBSRC and NC3Rs will fund 80 per cent of the full economic cost. Projects may last for up to two years.

Scientific scope

Proposals must fall within the BBSRC’s remit and the research supported should have the realistic possibility of replacing the use of specific in vivo models or animal studies in line with the NC3Rs mission. Proposals focused on non-animal technologies for use primarily as a disease-focused model, or for toxicological and safety assessment purposes are not eligible.

PI eligibility

Applicants from eligible UK-based organisations may apply. PIs must hold a PhD or equivalent qualificaton. Organisations normally eligible for UKRI funding include HEIs, eligible independent research organisations, public sector research establishments and UKRI-funded laboratories and facilities.
