Call summary

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council invites applications for its partner with researchers in Japan on synthetic cells or genomes call. This enables collaboration with researchers in Japan on projects to develop novel approaches, technologies and applications relating to synthetic cells or synthetic genomes. The project must be primarily relevant in both the UK and Japan. The total budget is £1.5 million. The full economic cost may be up to £187,500. BBSRC will fund 80 per cent of the full economic cost. Projects may last between 18 months and two years.

Scientific scope

Projects are encouraged to to integrate and exploit complementary technological advances, including, but not limited to: •robotics; •automation; •microfluidics; •artificial intelligence; •computer-aided design.

PI eligibility

The UK PI must be based at a UK institution eligible for funding in accordance with standard UKRI practice. Institutions normally eligible for UKRI funding include UK HEIs, research council institutes, UKRI-approved independent research organisations and UKRI-approved public sector research establishments. The PI and co-investigator must meet one of the following criteria: be resident in the UK at the time of the application; be moving to the UK to take up an already agreed contract at an eligible organisation and remain in the UK for the duration of the proposed project.
