Call summary
Innovate UK, in collaboration with the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, and under Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, invites registrations for its energy catalyst round 9 call. This enables organisations to accelerate the innovations needed to create new or improved clean energy access in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia or Indo-Pacific regions. The total budget is £20m. Funding amounts depend on the organisation and project type.
Scientific scope
Proposals must focus on the following areas:
•improving energy access in official development assistance (ODA) eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Indo-Pacific regions;
•have a technology or business model which is affordable, reliable and low carbon;
•consider the role of gender equality and social inclusion.
The competition consists of three strands:
•early-stage strand, for projects with eligible costs between £50,000 and £300,000;
•mid-stage strand, for projects with total eligible costs between £50,000 and £1.5 million;
•late-stage strand, for projects with total eligible costs between £50,000 and £5m.
PI eligibility
The administrative lead must be based in the UK and be from an SME, academic institute, charity, non-governmental organisation or a research and technology organisation. The technical lead can be from anywhere in the world. International partners are strongly encouraged.
