Call summary

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, supported by the Carbon Recycling Network and the Biomass Biorefinery Network, invites applications for their proof of concept call. This supports proof of concept projects that will enable a step-change in fermentation processes to further reduce the carbon footprint of biomass exploitation. Up to four £50,000 grants are available for projects of less than one year in duration. Funding is provided at up to 80 per cent full economic cost and the remaining amount must be provided by the awardee at the academic institution.

Scientific scope

The aim of the call is to develop bio-manufacturing solutions that will contribute to the UKs as well as global NetZero targets by eliminating CO2 production during biomass-based fermentation bioprocesses, while simultaneously improving productivity through incorporation of the lost carbon into the chemicals and material being manufactured. Funds will be prioritised for accessing and developing key technology areas using UK open access technology service providers and those that have clear potential for further funding or have a route to commercial translation.

PI eligibility

The PI must be resident in the UK and an academic employee at the lecturer or equivalent level at an eligible organisation, which may be a HEI, a research institute funded by a research council or an independent research organisation. They must be members of both of the networks.
