Call summary
The Natural Environment Research Council invites applications for its become programme champion for the BIO-Carbon research programme call. This supports projects that will provide a new understanding of the role of marine life in ocean carbon storage. The aim is to provide a fundamental understanding of key biological processes that are globally relevant. The full economic cost of the champion grant can be up to £575,000. Funding covers up to 80 per cent of the full economic cost. The champion role is for 68 months.
Scientific scope
There are three interlinked programme challenges, which will address three aspects of biological influence:
•how does marine life affect the potential for seawater to absorb CO2, and how will this change?
•how will the rate at which marine life converts dissolved CO2 into organic carbon change?
•how will climate change-induced shifts in respiration by the marine ecosystem affect the future ocean storage of carbon?
PI eligibility
Applicants must be based at approved UK higher education institutions, approved research institutes, approved independent research organisations or public sector research establishments.
