Call summary

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council invites applications for its lead energy demand research as the energy demand champion call. The full economic cost of the project can be up to £312,500. UKRI will fund 80 per cent of the full economic cost. Funding can be used for teaching buyout, networking activities, workshops and administrative support.

Scientific scope

The awarded project is expected to: •increase understanding and actionable insights to inform the transformation of energy demand within the UK and internationally; •provide leadership through the design and implementation of an interdisciplinary energy demand research centre that includes wider stakeholders; •champion interdisciplinary research, integrating a range of disciplines to provide actionable solutions; •support capacity and capability building for research and knowledge mobilisation, to ensure insights are deployed as rapidly and effectively as possible; contribute to the wider national and international •energy demand research community, including being an equality, diversity and inclusivity role model.

PI eligibility

UK-based researchers at HEIs, research council institutes, UKRI-approved independent research organisations, public sector research establishments and NHS bodies with research capacity may apply. Applications are also welcome from academics who job share, have a part time contract, are currently committed to other large existing UKRI grants, such as centres, hubs, programme grants or centres for doctoral training. They may be from any discipline and should have a background in research, industry or policy. One co-investigator may be invited on the application.
