Call summary

The Natural Environment Research Council invites proposals for its large grants. These support adventurous, large-scale and complex research tackling big science questions that cannot be addressed through other NERC funding schemes. Research funded via this scheme is expected to have the potential to be world-leading and can address any area of science within the NERC remit, including strategic priorities or new curiosity-driven research challenges. Grants are worth between £1.2 million and £3.7m at 100 per cent full economic cost for up to five years. Proposals may use agreements between NERC and other funders such as National Science Foundation and São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) to help secure funding for international collaborations.

Scientific scope

Environmental Science. Proposals typically involve multidisciplinary approaches via inter- or intra-institutional collaboration, although this is not a requirement. (Forecast deadline).

PI eligibility

The PI msut be resident in the UK and employed by an eligible UK HEI, research council institute or a recognised independent research organisation. They must be employed at lecturer level or above.
